OLDER NEWS July 2016 - Dec 2016

Monday

December
Two games have been added to the games section A game from Alan Burnet and one from myself. Both feature a win for both sides of an exchange French. One game show a satisfying slow squeeze and the other is more explosive.

There may be a chess players and draughts players mini draughts tourney next Thursday December 15th at 7.30pm. This depends on interest. I (Simon Smith) will let folks know nearer the date if we will be going ahead with this event. Players from other clubs are welcome - but please could anyone interested email me to show intent. Draughts is a very underrated game and good chess players can't be expected to beat draughts players !

Recent new club member Phil Maybury sent a game for which he is justfiably proud. There aren't many people who can say they beat Britain's first GM Tony Miles in a simultaneous. Comments in the games section.

The 2A team are faltering in our bid to get promotion. We lost 3 1/2 to 2 1/2 against Halesowen despite looking likely to win. It's not over till the fat lady has sung - so they say. If there are any amply proportioned women with a background in operatics, please contact the club secretary. (I will continue to publish other match results as I receive them)

Grandmaster and world championship candidate Mark Taimanov has passed on at the age of 90. After losing to Bobby Fischer 6 - 0 I understand he famously said something like 'At least I still have my music'. Taimanov was an accomplished pianist and piano teacher. Music and chess ability have often said to be mutually supporting influences.

Our longest member, treasurer, and musician/teacher Brian Whitehouse once accommodated Taimanov during a simultaneous tour of England and played at our club. Feel free to forward your own recollections of this great player and I will put them on the site.

I have received games from a few club members but still need more if you could send them please. Thanks to Alan and Phil.

Terrill Trophy: Warley 2A beat Solihull 1  by 3 1/2 to 2 1/2 and  don't need the 2 1/2 handicap which would have made it  6 to 2 1/2. A good result !

BDCL Individual updates. John  Fahy writes : "Div 1 - Andy Southall has progressed to a possible semi-final clash with former WQ favorite Mike Wildboar ?? that should be one to watch.

Div 2 - John Fahy has also progressed to the semi-finals with a win on time over fellow Club member Alan Burnet in a gruelling battle over 3 1/2 hours !?! in which Alan had control of the game for all bar the last five minutes !!! - fortunate revenge for John following Alan's win at the same stage a couple of years ago.

Div 4 - Phil Maybury was unable to repeat his efforts of last year - with a trip to the Finals - going out at an early stage this season."

Not withstanding that early exit Phil is another useful player we have picked up recently. We seem to be attracting quite a few new members.

The Warwickshire U160 side under Warley Quinborne Club Secretary John Fahy, 'Master of the Dark Arts' and digital clock aficionado beat  Greater Manchester 10 to 6. Congratulations to him and recent club addition Adrian Hussain who had a good win for the county.

After our 3 1/2 to 2 1/2 defeat John Fahy writes : "A second home defeat for the WDCL Div One side v Stafford was rather disappointing - perhaps we should just play our matches away from home where we have won 2/2 ?!?"

Warley Quinborne are proud to be associated with Warwickshire County Chess. Recently appointed Warwickshire  First Team Supremo and Warley Quinborne member, Jon Turner, steered the ship to her first win under his captaincy against Nottinghamshire by 10 1/2 to 5 1/2..... and we were outgraded !!!

John Fahy reports : "The trip to Mutual Circle brought a first win of the campaign for the BDCL Div 2B side - good wins on boards 3 and 5 and four draws (2 agreed after adjournment) scored a 4 v 2 win and the team move off the bottom as a result. WQ thanked Mutual for setting the bottom three boards for the away side as white !!!"

After bumping into Peter Hughes from Mutual Circle on Thursday, I hadn't hitherto been aware of his longstanding membership of Warley Quinborne and before that Warley and Smethwick. I have updated the history section with an email of his interesting recollections. Also new info about the Spanish IM who once played for us. Thanks to Peter and Stewart.

A second successive away trip proved fruitful in WDCL Div 1 with a win v Walsall Kipping - wins on the bottom two boards pointing the team in the right direction and a well timed draw on board 3 securing the win.
Wednesday

October
A tough trip to South Birmingham in Dudley Div 3 ended in defeat for the team - although it was good to see Pauline Woodward win her opening game of the season.
Monday

October
Our Dudley Div 2 side gained a second consecutive win v Stourbridge - with a completely different team to that which played last Thursday - three draws and a win on board 1 secured the points.

Congratulations to Mik Singh for winning the Major Section of the Birmingham Rapidplay. Club President John Pakenham came close to winning in the Minor Section. Warley Quinborne were well represented at their original club venue. A well organised event where Midlands players enjoyed the usual conviviality as well as the chess.

A reminder to ALL WARLEY QUINBORNE PLAYERS. Could you please let me have your best game for our games section. I have added an old game between two Warley Quinborne players going back a few years.

Can anyone identify the young players in the gallery section ?

Three home matches on the night ended with two wins and a loss - WQ 2A maintained their 100% start to the season in the BDCL with a comfortable win eventually over a slightly under strength Mutual Circle, a fascinating double-edged game on board 6 going in our favour - We also won our opening match in Dudley Div 2 with a win over Kidderminster - Unfortunately our BDCL Div 6 side slipped to a second straight defeat against a very strong Rushall team for this division, however a good performance on board 1 gained a draw against a strong opponent.
Wednesday
5th
October
WDCL Div 1 away v Telford - the long journey north was worth while on this occasion with the team recording a 4 1/2 v 1 1/2 win, an early win on board 6 setting the team on the way.
Monday
3rd
October
WDCL Div 3 away v Rushall - a win on board 1 in a action packed blitz finish was not enough to force a result and the team lost 3 1/2 v 1 1/2 despite having some promising positions in the early part of the match.

WQ 2B were severely outgraded by South Bham 1 in round 1 of the Terril. Despite a brave performance they lost 6 - 0 . A match result that doesn't necessarily reflect how close some of the games were.

A keen fixture watcher has noted that Mike Wildboar, a long term first team stalwart has resurfaced as at Coleshill Chess Club. We wish Mike well for the coming season !
Wednesday

A successful start for WQ 2A in round 1 of the Terril, beating South Bham 2  4 1/2 to 1 1/2. The score slightly flattered us, as the games were mostly closely fought - but on to round two !

The Wolverhampton League kicked off tonight for us. The first team lost 3 1/2 to 2 1/2 against an extremely strong Halesowen team. The second team newly promoted to division three started off solidly with a 2 1/2 to 2 1/2 draw against Wolverhampton that could have gone either way, with time scrambles playing decisive roles in the outcome of games. (Full match details can be found by clicking on FIXTURES tab above.)

Jon Turner becomes Warwickshire first team captain. John Fahy is already captain of the U180 and U160 teams. So the club is well represented by county captains !
Thursday 1st September The Birmingham league starts for the club with the Division 2A side narrowly beating the Divison 2B side 3 1/2 to 2 1/2
Thursday 18th August Warley Quinborne beat Sutton Coldfield in the annual preseason "Cold War Cake Match" friendly 16 1/2 to 11 1/2. Miss Fahy bakes exceedingly nice cakes and are very much appreciated in this unique fixture.
